Precision Welding Withstands Rigorous Testing Requirements

Any time GSM Industrial performs a welding job, we consider the purpose of the finished product and pay careful attention to the project specs. When precision welding—or welding that requires the joining of components with tight tolerances—is needed, our welding specialists are up to the challenge.

When manufacturing piping for a company that provides and transports liquid gas products to its customers, we knew that extra attention and precision would be imperative. Those precision welds would have to hold up to rigorous testing.

The Importance of Precision Welding for this Gas-Transfer Piping Project

GSM Industrial was hired to manufacture pipes used to transfer liquid gasses to and from trucks that transport those gasses to customers. The piping would also transfer those same gasses from shipping tanks to storage tanks.

The pipes were manufactured from stainless steel, and the entire process required TIG-welding precision and the use of a purge gas. TIG welding is used for the cleanest, most precise welds and is often employed in industries like gas & oil, aviation, and aerospace.

The most challenging part of the job was ensuring that the welds could withstand thorough and rigorous testing demands, as directed by the customer.

Rigorous Testing of our Precision Welds

When considering the nature of the contents that would pass through the pipes, our testing included exposure to extreme cold, followed by exposure to extreme heat. The welded pipe joint was wrapped with a liquid-nitrogen-soaked rag until the stainless steel’s temperature was reduced to -30°F and maintained for one-and-a-half minutes. Then, the joint was exposed to heat from a heat gun until it reached 150°F – 160°F and held there for two minutes.

Next, a visual inspection was conducted to ensure no cracks in the welds. Then a thorough internal visual inspection assured 100% penetration of the welds with no defects. And finally, the pipes were pressure tested at 30 psi to verify that no leaks existed.

GSM Industrial’s piping field crews have the skills to get your piping job done efficiently and get it done right—just as we did for this long-time customer. We are an ASME Certified Shop specializing in the fabrication of mechanical piping, well-equipped and thoroughly prepared for applications like Victaulic, FRP, alloy, PVC, welded, and threaded piping.

Precision Welding by GSM Industrial

The welding technicians at GSM Industrial have completed 382 individual piping sections for this customer to date, and we’re proud to report there have been no failures in testing.

Any piping system’s strength is defined by its precision welding. Weld defects, like porosity, can be caused by several conditions, including improper techniques and equipment settings—but our welding specialists know to avoid all common (and not-so-common) welding problems.

What type of piping and welding do you require for your project? Let GSM Industrial be your partner in fabricating and installing any piping system, including things like small gas train pipe skids, a large ethanol skid, onsite mechanical, process, or sanitary piping.
